Til death do us part....
Day of the Dead is really a celebration of LIFE. It reminds us that we come from all our ancestors who have preceded us.

These traditional cookies are popular throughout Mexico where pecans are the most abundant nut. They are tasty and wedding guests appreciate a little bag of them to nibble on while the photos are being taken!
Mix together thoroughly:
- 1 cup soft butter
- 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Sift together and stir in:
- 2 1/4 cups sifted white flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Mix in
3/4 cup finely chopped nuts - pecans preferred.
Chill dough then roll into 1 in. balls. Bake until set, but not browned. While warm, roll in powdered sugar. Cool and roll in powdered sugar again or wait until just before serving.
Bake at 400 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes. Should make about 4 dozen cookies. (photo below) |
We received a frantic call at the office the other day from an exasperated Mother-of-the-Bride saying her daughter <sob> wanted skeletons <sob> at her wedding and what were WE going to do about it?"
Her daughter and son-in-law-to-be were thrilled with their Day of the Dead wedding plans and had purchased skeleton champagne toasting flutes and a skeleton cake topper from us. Now they were interested in customized papel picado banners for the reception hall and outside the church.
The mother was mortified and didn't understand the significance of the Day of the Dead themed wedding.
I explained that this was a popular and new wedding choice embraced by Latinos and non-Latinos as well for their special day!
Brides interpret Day of the Dead & use its imagery for their weddings because they like what it means. They love the fun & color, but more importantly, the inspiration of it. Eternal Love & Til Death Do Us Part are sayings with special meaning.
