Life is fleeting and fragile...
express yourself!
This is the wisdom that Day of the Dead reminds us about year round. Dazzle your valentine with a unique and memorable gift - what better than something hand made?

When I was living in Oaxaca, Valentines Day, or Dia de San Valentín, was an exciting day. School started late, because teenage students gathered for the traditional Valentine promenade at the beautiful El Llano park about 8 o'clock in the morning. Girls looked especially grown up with flowers and ribbons in their hair. Boys with shined shoes and excessive hair gel arrived with big batches of red, pink and white carnations in their arms.
Gaggles of giggly young women walked the park clockwise, briefly pausing at each group of nervous boys who were walking in the opposite direction, and graciously received single carnations from these handsome gents until they carried away huge bouquets in their arms! Seemed to me to be the Oaxacan equivalent to a Jr. High dance. Everyone seemed happy - the flower sellers who ringed the park were happy, as were the mother's who were taking photos of their little darlings but the boys couldn't wait to distribute all of their carnations and return to math class!
There's no telling how many times the gold lion statues at the park entrance have watched this tradition unfold under the shade of the 200 year old tule trees... but it is a beautiful and memorable tradition!
